İzmir’s Historic Shopping Paradise

Kemeraltı Bazaar

İzmir'de Gezilecek Yerler

Located in the heart of İzmir, the jewel of the Aegean, Kemeraltı Bazaar is one of the city’s most colorful, lively, and longstanding shopping destinations. Just a few minutes’ walk from our hotel in Çankaya, Oğlakçıoğlu Park Hotel, this historic bazaar attracts not only shopping enthusiasts but also those curious about history and local flavors.

The History of Kemeraltı

For centuries, Kemeraltı was one of İzmir’s most important trade and shopping centers. Silk, spices, and valuable goods brought by camel caravans were gathered in these inns and shipped worldwide by Genoese and Frankish merchants.

Over time, the area transformed into a vibrant and colorful hub where cultures and beliefs intersected among different peoples. This port fortress, which witnessed many sieges throughout history, was not captured by the Ottomans during the time of Yıldırım Bayezit, but things changed in 1402 when Timur came to the city and managed to neutralize the fortress. Timur’s soldiers brought stones from Kadifekale to fill the harbor, leaving the fortress defenseless. Thus, this area, gradually cut off from the sea, evolved into a new settlement and shopping point that would be named Kemeraltı. The region became even richer with inns, baths, mosques, synagogues, and fountains, while the arched shops built along its main street gave Kemeraltı its name. Today, Kemeraltı continues to preserve the texture of the past and remains one of İzmir’s most colorful and must-see shopping and tourist spots.

Historical and Cultural Stops

Kemeraltı is not just about shopping; it’s also one of the most enjoyable ways to touch İzmir’s deep-rooted past. Important sites such as Hisar Mosque, Kızlarağası Han, Havra Street, and the Historic Agora near Basmane add depth to this journey.

Culinary Stops

The area is also famous for its local flavors. Boyoz, söğüş, kumru, pickles, dibek coffee, and many other tastes await you at the local eateries in Kemeraltı’s streets.
