Historical Heritage: From Alexander the Great to the Present
Kadifekale was built in the 4th century BC by Lysimachus, one of Alexander the Great's generals. According to legend, while hunting on Mount Pagos, Alexander the Great fell asleep under a plane tree and dreamed of two water nymphs. They advised him to rebuild the city of Smyrna on Pagos Hill and relocate its people there. Upon waking up, Alexander the Great consulted to an oracle, who confirmed that the new city would bring greater happiness to its
citizens. Thus, Alexander the Great ordered the construction of a fortress on Pagos Hill, giving birth to Kadifekale. Beyond its historical significance, Kadifekale also holds a religious importance. Saint Polycarp, who spread Christianity during the Roman era, was martyred in the ancient theater at its base. This event, along with underground cisterns and documents suggesting his tomb once stood within these walls, underscores Kadifekale's sacred legacy. The name "Kadifekale" was first used by Evliya Çelebi in the 17th century, who claimed it derived from the legendary Queen Kaydafe. Once known as the "Kaydafe Castle", the name evolved over time. The fortress, used throughout Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman periods, bears traces of diverse civilizations. Today, its surviving walls, towers and lookout points still evoke the grandeur of the past.
